We are absolutely delighted to announce that Andrew Wareham has accepted the position of Musical Director of The Rogerstone Community Band.
Andy started playing the trumpet at the age of six under the tuition of Les Milam and since then has always had a strong passion for music.
Andy is a keen jazz trumpeter and brass band cornetist and has performed in a number of high profile locations. These include the Montreux Jazz Festival, Principality Stadium, Wales Millennium Centre, Symphony Hall Birmingham, Barbican Centre and the Royal Albert Hall.
He has received a number of awards for his performances, most notably a special honour from Wynton Marsalis after performing a solo at the ‘Essentially Ellington’ competition, hosted by Jazz at Lincoln Center at the Barbican Centre in London. In addition to this, he has also been featured regularly on BBC Radio as part of rock band ‘Johnny Cage and the Voodoo Groove’.
Andy is also a published composer and has won a number of awards for his music, including the 'Vivendi Composition Award' and 'Best Student Composition' at the 2016 University Brass Band Championships of Great Britain.
Andy has worked with leading professional musicians and conductors including Dr Robert Childs (The Cory Band and Grimethorpe Colliery Band), Mike Fowles (Desford Colliery Band), Paul Holland (The Flowers Band), Roger Argente (Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Superbrass), Allen Vizzutti (American Trumpet Virtuoso) and Ian Porthouse (Tredegar Town Band).
Having recently graduated from Cardiff University as a Bachelor of Music with an upper second-class honours degree, Andy is currently studying a post-graduate course in Brass Band Conducting under Dr. Robert Childs at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. In addition Dr. Robert Childs has offered his ongoing support and guidance to Andy in his new role.
